Words are not adequate to express the impact BRA has had in walking through this treacherous season with me. I was thrown into an absolute nightmare, and this community of thrivers has helped pull me back into life, one step at a time. I am forever grateful for the enduring love and sacrifice to not leave me, but to love me back to my new self."  - Whitney

FAQs

  • Who is BRA?

BRA is an acronym for Breast cancer Recovery in Action.  We took out the “c” on purpose – because cancer does not define us, even while it has shaped us.

  • Who is a survivor?

Survivor [sərˈvīvər] – the dictionary says this is a noun, but we say it is also a verb. Each member of BRA actively participates in the process of healing and growth. We define a survivor as someone:

    • who carries a genetic mutation and has prophylactic surgery; also known as a “pre-vivor”
    • who has had a diagnosis of breast cancer, of any type, recently or long ago
    • who is living with metastatic breast cancer
  • What do you see in our logo?

Our logo contains a pink ribbon so we’d be recognized as a breast cancer organization – but we know we’re so much more than pink ribbons! This one is upside down because we turn cancer upside down.

    • To some, the logo looks like a flower. It represents opening up and blooming.
    • Others see a phoenix in the logo. We’ve definitely risen from the ashes!
    • The extra “arms” mean we reach out to everyone.
    • The dots in between the arms represent different skin tones, because breast cancer does not discriminate.
    • The logo was designed by a survivor, Leslie Haines. See more of her creative work at lesliehaines.com
  • Who can participate in BRA programs?

Our programs are open to breast cancer survivors at every stage—whether you are newly diagnosed, in treatment, newly finished, years out, or living with metastatic disease. There is no “right time” to join. If you’re looking for support, you are welcome here.

  • How much do programs cost?

All BRA programs are offered at no cost to participants - we rely on donations and financial support from our community. We believe support should never depend on ability to pay, and we are committed to making our programs accessible to every survivor who needs them.

  • Do I have to live in Nashville to participate?

Not necessarily. While our exercise program is offered in person in Middle Tennessee, many of our programs—like Nutrition, Emotional Wellness (virtual options), and BRA Banter—are available to survivors in multiple locations.

  • What makes BRA different from other support programs?

BRA focuses on whole-person survivorship—supporting your physical, emotional, and educational needs in one connected community. Our programs are survivor-centered, relationship-driven, and always offered at no cost.
