Exploring Breast Reconstruction, Community & You

Join us for a morning of conversation, connection, and community focused on breast reconstruction and life beyond breast cancer.

Presented in partnership by BRA Groups and the Frist College of Medicine Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Interest Group, The Art of Healing brings together plastic surgeons, breast cancer survivors, medical students, healthcare professionals, artists, and community organizations.

  • Saturday, October 24 | 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m
  • Frist College of Medicine at Belmont University
  • Free and open to the community

Breast Reconstruction Panel + Q&A

Breast reconstruction does not necessarily end when the initial procedure is complete. Our panel will explore what survivors can expect in the months and years that follow.

We’ll talk about long-term results, revisions, implant replacement, how reconstructed breasts may change with age, TRAM and other flap reconstruction, activity and exercise, ongoing care, and when changes are worth discussing with your medical team.

Featured Panelists

  • Lauren Connor, MD
  • Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon, Vanderbilt University Medical Center
  • Meg DeLozier Ferguson, MD
  • Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon, DeLozier Plastic Surgery
  • Plus breast cancer survivor panelists representing different reconstruction choices and experiences.
  • Survivors will share what worked well, what helped them feel seen and supported, and where opportunities for improvement remain. Their perspectives will offer survivors useful insight while helping current and future healthcare providers better understand the experience behind the medical care.

The Art of Healing Gallery

Explore work by local artists who have experienced breast cancer. The art may reflect healing, identity, joy, loss, humor, beauty, or simply who the artist is beyond a diagnosis. Participating artists will also reflect on the question: “What role has creativity played in your life during or after breast cancer?”

Community Resources

Connect with local resources and professionals supporting breast cancer survivors, including information about lymphedema and compression, areola and restorative tattooing, sexual health and intimacy, survivorship, wellness, and community support.

BRA Groups, Gilda’s Club, and other community partners will be on hand throughout the morning.
