The Art of Healing

On Saturday, October 24, 2026, BRA Groups and the Frist College of Medicine Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Interest Group at Belmont University came together to host The Art of Healing, a morning dedicated to breast reconstruction, survivorship, and the importance of patient-centered care.

The event brought together breast cancer survivors, plastic surgeons, medical students, healthcare professionals, artists, and community organizations for thoughtful conversations about life beyond breast cancer.

Beyond Reconstruction: Conversations That Matter

Breast reconstruction doesn't always end with the initial surgery. Bodies change, priorities shift, and survivors may have new questions years after treatment. Dr. Lauren Connor of Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Dr. Meg DeLozier Ferguson of DeLozier Plastic Surgery shared their expertise on reconstruction options, long-term results, revisions, and the importance of ongoing conversations between survivors and their medical teams.

One message stood out: Your body changes. Your needs may change. And you deserve care that evolves with you.

The Power of Survivor Voices

Some of the morning's most meaningful moments came from breast cancer survivors Jeri Sager and Jenadi Talbot, who generously shared their personal experiences with reconstruction and care. Jeri recalled a surgeon calling her at home before surgery to make sure they were on the same page. More importantly, to make sure that page was hers. It was a simple gesture that spoke volumes about the importance of listening, understanding personal priorities, and making survivors active partners in their care.

Their stories offered valuable perspectives for everyone in the room, especially future medical professionals. When survivors share their experiences, they help shape better care for those who follow.
