BRA Groups

Evidenced based nutrition guidelines to help you take charge of this next phase in your journey.

Do you have questions about what to eat after your breast cancer diagnosis or are you feeling overwhelmed by all of the information out there? Come join a BRA nutrition session! Created and led by our own registered dietitian nutritionist, Brittany Cardwell, these sessions are designed to help you:

  • Learn. Improve your understanding of the healthy eating guidelines for breast cancer survivors.
  • Take action. Be able to apply the recommendations to your lifestyle.
  • Be confident. Feel less overwhelmed about eating healthy and improve your sense of well-being.

BRA will be offering two nutrition sessions every month!  Each hour session will be focused on its own topic and consists of three parts: a topic review, Q+A, and an activity/recipe demonstration. Pre-registration is required for each session and registration closes the Monday prior to the session.

Fall/Winter 2025 Session Updates

Brittany, BRA's dietitian and nutrition class facilitator, is out on maternity leave this Fall. For this reason, our core Survivorship Nutrition sessions will resume next year! Session dates and times will be posted on this page in the months to come. In the meantime, here is an overview of our core session topics:

  • Healthy Hydration:  Staying hydrated is one of the most important yet underrated aspects of our health! Find out how much water you should be drinking each day (hint: it’s not 8 cups!) and what fluids count towards your daily hydration goal. We’ll also look at the role of alcohol and breast cancer risk and review how much, if any, is safe to consume.
  • Sugar and Breast Cancer:  During this session, we’ll break down the myths and truths of sugar intake and breast cancer risk/recurrence. You will gain a better understanding of the different types of sugars in our diet and how the type can influence health. We’ll also look at the three different categories of sugar substitutes and answer the question: are they a better alternative to sugar?
  • Eating the Rainbow: A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is a key aspect of a breast cancer survivorship diet. During this session, we’ll learn about how many fruits and vegetables we should be eating each day and discuss how to make sure we’re eating a colorful variety. We’ll also look at choosing between organic and conventional produce and the benefits and drawbacks of each.
  • Fueling with Fiber: A high-fiber diet has the potential to reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence. Find out how much fiber you should aim to fuel your body with each day and the foods you can eat to help reach your daily goal.
  • Picking Protein Sources: Protein plays a critical role in weight management and cell recovery. Gain a better understanding of your body’s daily protein needs and the best protein sources. We’ll look at plant and animal sources of protein and discuss where dairy and soy proteins fit into a healthy diet.
  • Choosing Healthy Fats: When it comes to including fats in our diet, quality matters. Find out what the optimal ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids is for our health and ways to keep this ratio favorable.

At this time, we also invite you to provide your feedback below! Share with us what nutrition topics you want to learn more about and what day and time works best for you to join a session!
